Every year in Austin, Woofstock brings people together through music and sunshine. But at its core, Woofstock has always stood for something bigger – helping shelter pets get their chance at finding a home.
Right now, the Austin Animal Services is at its capacity. This means every kennel is full and their hallways are lined with dogs waiting to find a home. Every adoption matters and creates space for another pet to be taken in and saved.
When a shelter hits capacity, staff and volunteers work harder, but space doesn’t magically appear. Adoptions, fostering, and even short-term placements make a real difference.
How to adopt according to AAC!
- Browse the animals online, then fill out the adoption questionnaire.
- Stop by the shelter to visit with any available animals in person. Dog introductions can be scheduled at a later date as needed.
- Speak with an Adoption Counselor. They’ll pull up your questionnaire and tell you more about the animal—their personality, their history, what to expect, etc.
- Get to know the animal! Play with them, pet them, or just sit with them.
- Once you’ve decided to adopt, you’ll fill out the paperwork onsite. Many animals are ready to go home that day!
- Enjoy your lifetime of unconditional love.
It is also common for pets to come in, but not immediately be ready for the adoption process. You can still help the shelter by doing a short-term foster! It’s a great way to get introduced to the world of having pets and see what works for you while also giving an animal a loving experience.
So if you’re heading out to Woofstock this year, take a second to remember why it truly exists. And if you’ve got room in your life (for a weekend, a month or even the long haul), consider making a connection with an animal in need.
Because here in Austin, everybody deserves a chance!
