Boarded up windows now line an empty 6th Street as businesses settle in for a lengthy closure period.  Some owners say they put up those boards to deter vandals and other criminals due to a scaling back of police response to some petty crimes.

Austin police union president Ken Casaday said, limiting those calls is a necessary precaution. He explained, “we’re more susceptible than the general public to catching this because we are around so many people.

He added, arrests are still being made for felonies and other major crimes.  But for things like theft, vandalism, minor traffic offenses, or even crashes, police won’t be responding.
