My Review of the Sara Bareilles Show - With Video!

Posted 5/20/2013 12:42:00 PM

Sara Bareilles' show at the Parish this past Friday night was one of the best I have EVER seen (and I don't say that lightly - I've seen a lot of shows)! This one had it all - an enthusiastic crowd, no wait time, eclectic setlist, touching moments, and of course a sassy songstress who commanded the room.

The headliner-less evening began with a sultry rendition of "Love on the Rocks," setting the vibe for the rest of the night. She played a wide range of her own material, including one song that had never been recorded and two from her Once Upon Another Time EP, plus three covers - two of which were Elton John songs ("Bennie & the Jets" and the closer, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road").

Highlights:

- A beautiful proposal on stage!

- Sara said Austin was the first city to sing along with "Brave" (and ...

Win Dave Matthews Band Tickets from Me and Andy This Week

Posted 5/13/2013 10:21:00 AM

The Dave Matthews Band is coming to Austin360 Amphitheatre with Carolina Chocolate Drops next Tuesday, May 21st. You can still buy your tickets here ... OR you can win them from me in the 10a hour and Andy Langer in the 4p hour all this week on 93.3 KGSR.

Every weekday at 10a, I tell you a song that will play before 11a. When that song plays, the first person to call me at (512)390-5477 wins the prize for the day.

I don't know how Andy is giving his away. You'll just have to listen and find out.

Good luck!

Stream the New Vampire Weekend Album One Week Early

Posted 5/7/2013 11:55:00 AM

Best give yourself extra time to get familiar with their new music before they play ACL this year! Modern Vampires of the City, due out May 14th, is album #3 and "the last of a trilogy" for Vampire Weekend. It's also the first time they've brought in someone from outside the group to co-produce (Ariel Rechtshaid, alongside multi-role playing band member Rostam Batmanglij). Stream and pre-order the album here on iTunes ... and try not to think too much about the album cover being a picture of the smoggiest day in NYC's history, which killed more than 150 people. Kind of gives the title more meaning, eh?

Modern Vampires of the City tracklisting:

01. Obvious Bicycle
02. Unbelievers
03. Step
04. Diane Young
05. Don’t Lie
06. Hannah Hunt
07. Everlasting Arms
08. Finger Back
09. Worship You
10. Ya Hey
11. Hudson
12. Young Lion

Please Donate Blood/Platelets and Materials for West, TX Victims Today (Updated)

Posted 4/18/2013 10:19:00 AM

It has not been the best week for news in the US. Last night's fertilizer plant explosion near Waco was a terrifying shock. There is a great need for blood donations (especially type O positive and negative) and an even greater need for platelets. Please go to www.inyourhands.org to find locations and see if you are eligible.

Cash and check donations can be made out to:

American Red Cross Heart of Texas Chapter
4224 Cobbs Drive
Waco, TX 76710

Or call (254)523-4985 to donate via credit or debit card.

KEYE has put together a great list of resources, but many of them are not in the Austin area - if I do hear of more immediately local ways to help, I will certainly share them with you (and likewise, please feel free to share them with me). Thank you.

Sara Bareilles Bonanza

Posted 4/15/2013 12:24:00 PM

We get the new single from Sara Bareilles, "Brave," on Wednesday! Considering her last release (the 2012 EP Once Upon Another Time, produced by Ben Folds) housed what I felt was her most mature and beautiful work yet, I cannot wait to hear what she has in store for us on her new album. It's rumoured to be titled Chaos and White Noise and is supposedly coming out late spring/early summer.

While you're waiting for that (and hopefully for some news regarding any KGSR specialty appearances while she's here for a sold-out show at the Parish on May 17th, I haven't heard either way yet), watch her on NBC's Community last week. In felt form.

Austin Iraq Veteran Hosting PTSD Book Release Celebration Tonight

Posted 4/12/2013 1:27:00 PM

Looking for something to do tonight? Here's a suggestion. Rather than summarize the email I received late yesterday, I'll just share it with you:

Kristen,

I'm not sure if you recognize the name, but my name is Andrew O'Brien and I am an Iraq veteran suicide survivor that has been on the news quite a bit recently here in Austin.

Right now we're starting a new journey and making a documentary out of my speeches that I do across the nation, as well as interviewing other veterans and family members in the area.  My website is www.wyshproject.org to learn more about me.

I'm having a book release/celebration of the new project at the Spider House Cafe tomorrow night [Friday] at 7 PM.  I was wondering if there was any way you could add in a little note about that on air some time during the day or tonight?

If ...
