Volunteers Needed for the Winter Special Olympics in Austin

It's too late to register to volunteer for SXSW, but it's my understanding that the the Winter Special Olympics are in desperate need of help. The events will be held here in Austin tomorrow through Feb 3. No special expertise is needed (though they are also looking for medical volunteers). You can sign up for as many two-hour shifts as you would like and get more information HERE.

When I was in Spokane, the National Figure Skating Association held the nationals competition in our city. They gave me rinkside tickets for the exhibition show to say thank you for hosting a broadcast inside the arena each day. That was cool and all, but what really got me was the intermission performance from a Special Olympics figure skater. As someone who used to figure skate when I was younger and quit because I was the same age as Tara Lapinski when she won Olympic gold and I couldn't land an axel, it brought tears to my eyes to see someone who had many more challenges than I did perform so beautifully and bravely.

I trust that if you choose to volunteer this weekend, you will have many inspirational experiences like this one, and I would love to hear about them afterward.
