About The Shade Project:
The Shade Project was founded in Austin, Texas in 2011. The non-profits mission is to educate the public on skin cancer prevention through community outreach and protect children and families from harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure by erecting shade structures over outdoor play areas.
The Shade Project has already erected two shade structures, one at Lamar Middle School in Austin, and the other at the Rosewood Park splash pad. They have established a grant process for schools to apply for shade at their school on the Shade Project’s website. The group also provides information on free monthly skin cancer screenings for patients with and without insurance, donates sunscreen to children’s schools and camps, and partners with children’s advocacy organizations like the YMCA. For information on past and future Shade Projects events, grants, skin cancer prevention tips, volunteer opportunities and information on how to donate to The Shade Project, visit www.theshadeproject.org.
