VSA Texas presents Distinguished Artist Veterans, our third annual group exhibition by Texas Veterans with disabilities. This year’s event is a touring exhibit that started November 2011 at the Texas State Capitol and ends the year-long tour in November 2012 at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio. The exhibit is on view at Lackland Air Force Base in the Arts and Crafts Center, 1441 Patrick St., Bldg 7041, Lackland AFB, Texas 78236 from November 6-17, 2012. An opening reception will be held on November 9, from 6-8 pm at the Center with an Artist Talk by artist Denise Knebel at 7:00 pm. Civilians who would like to attend the reception must RSVP to 512-454-9912 x12 with Name/DL#/DOB by November 5th. The exhibit can also be viewed during the hours of 9:00 am-6:00 pm Tues-Sat.
Artwork is on display by a dozen men and women who provided military service to our country and are now wounded warriors or veterans with disabilities. Some of their artwork addresses imagery from the service, while other pieces are beautiful sculptures, jewelry or drawings that reflect how they spend their time as civilians. The touring schedule includes stops in San Antonio, Bryan, and El Paso, as well as other communities and cities in the state. Celia Hughes, Executive Director for VSA Texas says, “In the past two years, VSA has worked with 35 Artist Veterans from Korea to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom; showcasing talent and giving voice and support to returning Wounded Warriors. We look forward to celebrating this exhibit as it travels across the state where we can reach more veterans and their families.” Support for the Distinguished Artist Veterans program is provided by Robert Worth VFW Post 3216 in Big Lake, TX, VFW Post 9174 in San Antonio, TX, VFW Post 8315 in Schertz, TX, Martinez Brothers Taxidermy in Austin, TX and the National Arts and Disability Center.
