Kids in a New Groove's Music for the Soul with Michael Franti and Spearhead

Kids in a New Groove provides private music lessons and mentorship to kids in the Texas foster care system. Our vision is to build a solid foundation for foster youth so that they can age out of care or become adopted with measurable tools for success. Our program reaches children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, and empowers them with the gift of music. Importantly, our highly qualified teachers move with our students when they are transferred between foster homes, giving them a friend and consistent mentor they can count on and trust to come teach every week, no matter where the child is living.  Finally, every child can earn their own brand new instrument by participating in our program, all at no cost to them. Through Kids in a New Groove, music lessons become a lifeline to a better future for Texas foster youth.

Our fundraising event will be held on Thursday, September 20th at the Long Center with artist Michael Franti and Spearhead. His socially conscious platform in combination with his recent hit record "The Sound of Sunshine" is a perfect fit for Kids in a New Groove's mission. The Sound Of Sunshine -- the inspired and inspiring album by Michael Franti & Spearhead -- is a kind of musical sun shower, a bright, beautiful and often buoyant song cycle created to bring all kinds of listeners a sense of hope during rough and rainy times for so many in our world.

“Music is sunshine,” says Michael Franti, one of the most positive and conscious artists in music today. “Like sunshine, music is a powerful force that can instantly and almost chemically change your entire mood. Music gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose.” “Music is something you can’t hold in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights.”
