South Austin Tex-Mex Mainstay Calls It A Day After Almost 60 Years

Grand Old Austin Tour | El Gallo

Interesting that right as I started up what we're calling the Grand Old Austin Tour - a weekly peek into Austin's most historic and longest-standing restaurants and bars - we got the word that one of our town's oldest Tex-Mex joints was about to shut down after having been in business since 1957.

El Gallo has been slinging that greasy good stuff on South Congress for almost 60 years, and owner Jill Kennedy gave me the skinny on the shutdown when I made a swing through on the Wednesday prior to the closure at the end of January. Glad to hear that this was largely a voluntary end for El Gallo, and we wish the Kennedys all the best.
