Shinyribs Invite Students To Jam At Unplugged At The Grove

Thursday night's Unplugged at the Grove show with Shinyribs was topped off with an appearance by five student horn players who joined the band for the final two songs, and the epic conga line that ensued.

"It was their first time to play with a real band," said Tiger Daniel Anaya, trumpet player with the Tijuana Trainwreck Horns, who told the students they should prepare to "get funky," and ditch the usual structured way of playing with a concert band.  He said they didn't get to rehearse with Shinyribs, but he did go over the two songs with them beforehand, using videos he found on YouTube that were taken with someone's phone.

The pairing of the students with the band was put together by Anthropos Arts, a local group that connects at-risk youth with professional musicians.  Students get free instruction and mentoring from local musicians, as well the opportunity to perform with them.

Shinyribs have a new album coming out this winter called Okra Candy, and will make up their Blues on the Green date on August 13.
