What our music tastes say about our personalities according to science

Have you ever caught yourself - maybe while grocery shopping or in the dressing room of a store - and thought "what is this song that they're playing? And who could possibly like this!" You're not alone. But now, there's a science to determine who that particular fan may be and what else they're interested in.

According to The Atlantic, Cambridge psychologist David Greenberg figured out that musical taste falls into one of two personality categories: empathizers or systemizers.

Empathizers are a group of people who are in touch with the feelings of those around them while "systemizers" are focused on the world around them and rules and patterns that control it.

According to the online journal PLoS One, over 4,000 participants took part in multiple experiments by taking a personality test and listening to music while rating 50 pieces of music.

In the end, Greenberg found out that those who preferred folk, electronica, or music that was more on the mellow side were empathizers. While those that preferred artist that more intense aligned with systemizers.
