Statue of Austin's Beloved Icon Leslie May Be Coming Soon to Congress Ave.

 

The long-awaited statue memorialization of Leslie Cochran, a lively fixture of downtown Austin for over twenty years, may finally be coming to fruitition, KXAN reports. Local filmmaker Spencer Nutting is working to raise $300,000 to fund a documentary about Leslie, as well as for a statue to be created in his liking on a bench at Congress and 6th Street; one of Leslie's usual spots. A homeless man who frequently roamed the streets in drag and brought a smile to all who encountered him, Leslie left a huge hole in the heart of Austin when he passed away in 2012, and now Nutting is calling on the city to help keep his spirit alive by raising funds for the project.
