Prep your pet for Hurricane Harvey & help Austin animal shelters this weekend

Hurricane Harvey is here and we want to make sure that you and your pets are safe. We checked RedCross.org and other sources to round up a few tips to prepare your pet for a possible disaster.

  • Remember, if it's not safe for you to stay in your home during an emergency, then it's not safe for your pet
  • Check your fences before and after the storm
  • Make sure your pet has on their collar and correct tags
  • When you go to the grocery store this weekend to make your own preparations, make sure you pick stuff up for your pet and update their emergency kit
    • Emergency Kit should include: sturdy leash, pet carrier, food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter/pan, manual can opener, medications, medical records and information (in a waterproof container), first aid kit, current photos in case they get lost, pet beds and toys.
  • Make an evacuation plan
    • Know a safe place to take your pets, know which motels/hotels are pet-friendly, note that most Red Cross shelters can't accept pets because of health and safety concerns, prepare a list of phone numbers of friends and family members who could take in your pet in an emergency.
  • It might be too late now, but if your pet isn't already microchipped or up-to-date on vaccinations, make sure they are after the storm

If you'd like to help our Austin animal shelters, they could definitely use the help right now especially since most (if not all) shelters are taking in animals from other counties that are in Harvey's path.

Check their Facebook and Twitter pages for updates throughout the weekend (links below). They need everything from towels to chew toys. If you can't make it down to the shelter to donate items in person, you can also order items through their Amazon Wish Lists (links below). And as always, they are all looking for foster families to help create room in their shelters.
