Spoon

SpoonSpoon's career can best be exemplified by a sage observation in "Underdog," a rollicking horn-filled romp off their Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga CD: "You got no fear of the underdog, that's why you will not survive." Spoon is an underdog, and — no matter how successful they get — deep down they always will be. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (all produced by "grumpy old wizard" Mike McCarthy except for "Underdog," which was produced by Jon Brion) is perhaps the band's most intelligent and infectious collection yet of slightly-askew-rock-for-the-NPR-crowd. (And, candidly, it's a delightful kick in the teeth to the labels that didn't understand them, under-promoted them, and, well, dropped them over the years.)

Formed in Austin in 1993 by lead singer Britt Daniel and sticks man Jim Eno, the original lineup also included bassist Andy McGuire and guitarist Greg Wilson (the latter of which have since departed, replaced by Rob Pope and Eric Harvey). From the outset (seek out their full-length debut Telephono) right on through (Kill The Moonlight, Gimme Fiction), they've concocted a sound that draws from '80s crank like The Pixies as well as lush, heartbreaking pop and haunting art rock. Constantly evolving, the group's creative daring and ambition is its most attractive asset.

In 2007 Daniel (who's masqueraded under a few names including Drake Tungsten), took time off to collaborate with composer Brian Reitzell on the score to the Will Ferrell comedy Stranger Than Fiction. The soundtrack also features several Spoon tracks.
