Maybe the greatest strength of the Texas-based folk-rock outfit the Dedringers is that they make what they do sound so easy. Blending classic-rock-style guitar riffing with a pop-lover’s sense of melody and harmony and a crafty singer-songwriter’s knack for sharp, sly lyrics, the group creates music that’s both meaty and laid-back, fresh and timeless. Both geographically and sonically, the band fits into the “Texas music scene,” with the scope and smarts of their music setting them far apart from any beer-extolling roadhouse band. The band has grown from local favorites to nationally touring act on the strength of their energetic live performances.
The Dedringers are actually two bands in one. They were founded as an acoustic duo by singer/guitarists Sean Faires and Jonny Burke when the pair were just 17. The two honed their chops playing all kinds of Austin-area venues, developing material that nodded to such influences as Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons and John Prine. Eventually beefing up to an electric foursome with a rhythm section, Faires and Burke were able to make music of greater power but equal nuance — in essence adding some Crazy Horse energy to their Neil Young roots. The current lineup includes bassist John Michael Schoepf and drummer Josh Garner.
In the summer of 2008, five years after Faires and Burke began gigging together, the band released its debut album, Sweetheart of the Neighborhood on the Dedcrow label — a joint venture between the band and its manager, Mike Crowley. The album was recorded with top Nashville producer R.S. Field, and includes such original Dedringers fan favorites as “Tonight,” “Sideman’s Blues” and “Come With Me.”
