Cyril Neville

Cyril NevilleThe youngest of the Neville Brothers, Cyril Neville has been called a “landmark” of New Orleans thanks to four decades of furthering the uniquely rich funk and soul music of and his social activism for the Crescent City (among many other things, he started New Orleans Musicians Organized, a business consultancy for musicians). After Hurricane Katrina, Cyril relocated to Austin and became a fixture in that city as well.

His brothers Art, Charles and Aaron made sure that Cyril was brought up with music, and Cyril was 19 in 1967 when Art and Aaron invited him to sing and play in Art Neville and the Neville Sounds; since then, Cyril has sung and played with Aaron in Soul Machine and with Art in one of the Big Easy’s iconic bands, the Meters.

A percussionist, Cyril has guested on albums by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Robbie Robertson, Jimmy Buffett and Dr. John, among others, and with the Meters he toured with the Rolling Stones. He’s also performed with his own bands, Endangered Species, Tribe 13 and the Uptown Allstars (the Allstars combine the funk of New Orleans with Afro-Caribbean rhythms to create a new genre known as second-line reggae). And Cyril has fit all this into a schedule that, since 1977, includes numerous recordings with his “other band,” the Neville Brothers.

Cyril has released a pair of albums with the Uptown Allstars and two with Tribe 13 to go with three solo offerings including 2009’s Brand New Blues. Of course, “solo” is a relative term because there are always other Nevilles involved — in the case of Brand New Blues, brother Art and nephews Ivan and Ian are among the many guests.
