THE GOURDS
You would think that after multiple albums and nearly two decades of touring coast-to-coast and across the pond, the Gourds would have mastered the art of professional musicianship. Well, they have. The hometown heroes have cornered the alt/indie/ roots and sensibilities of our fair city better than any music group going. They also happen to be the quirkiest bunch of guys you’ll ever meet. Playing 150 gigs a year will do that to a band. Fresh from recording their most recent effort, Old Mad Joy in Woodstock, NY, The Gourds embody the sound of the great American band.
GIVERS
Lafayette, Louisiana-based quintet GIVERS’ brilliant debut In Light is an album uplifted by constantly evolving rhythms, warmed by bright guitars, and illuminated by the harmonious selflessness that is the band’s mission statement. The band’s beginnings date back to their New Orleans-based education, but when Hurricane Katrina hit their new home, the members were sent back to their native Lafayette, where they formed the real basis of GIVERS. Most notable about GIVERS is the joy that flows through each note on their debut; a joy that only the truly gracious can have. Now a member of the Glassnote Entertainment family, we can expect nothing but great things from this optimistic outfit.
MAT KEARNEY
Mat Kearney’s Young Love (his first album under the Universal Republic Records umbrella) started out not as a collection of songs, but a tapestry of heartfelt and hypnotic stories woven with the intent of putting smiles on the faces of listeners. The Oregon-born and Nashville-based artist saw his fair share of success recently- with his music not only appearing on the Billboard charts, but within the framework of popular television- gracing shows such as Friday Night Lights, Grey’s Anatomy, and more. After all of his success, Kearney turned to the hip-hop genre for inspiration, resulting in an entirely different feel for this record- one of joy, honesty, and wisdom.
DAWES
A self-described “American rock ‘n’ roll band,” Dawes represent everything pure and true about that tried-and-true concept – four talented friends making music together, fueled by a shared belief in the power of their songs. With Nothing Is Wrong, the Los Angeles-based band – singer/guitarist Goldsmith, his brother Griffin on drums, keyboardist Tay Strathairn, and bassist Wylie Gelber – continue to master their blend of singer/songwriter reflection with arrangements inspired by folk and country, all ringing guitars, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt melodies. After spending much of the past two years on tour, songs like “Coming Back To A Man” and “Time Spent In Los Angeles” have a restless, unsettled quality evocative of life lived on the road, proving Nothing is Wrong as a work of staggering growth and evolution, perfectly manifesting the band’s distinctive voice.
